What is SYNAPSE IDEATHON?

SYNAPSE IDEATHON is the first international micro-grant call by the Aion Synapse Foundation, designed to boost applied research projects with the potential to generate knowledge, innovation, and social impact in Latin America and the Caribbean.

AION Synapse Foundation invites researchers, postgraduate students, lecturers, members of universities or research centers, and professionals working in scientific, social, or technological fields to submit research and innovation projects with social impact in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Every application must have the affiliation with, or endorsement of, an eligible university, higher education institution, or research center or institute of the region.

Selected projects may receive a micro-grant of up to USD 1,000, technical support from the AION Synapse Foundation, and the opportunity to become part of a regional research and innovation network with social impact.

Eligibility

Who can participate?

AION Synapse Foundation invites researchers, postgraduate students, lecturers, members of universities or research centers, and professionals working in scientific, social, or technological fields to submit research and innovation projects with social impact in Latin America and the Caribbean. Every application must have the affiliation with, or endorsement of, an eligible university, higher education institution, or research center or institute of the region.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a researcher, postgraduate student, lecturer, member of a university or research center, or a professional working in a scientific, social, or technological field.
  • Have the affiliation with, or endorsement of, an eligible university, higher education institution, or research center or institute of Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Present an original proposal aligned with the thematic areas of the call.
  • Have the capacity to execute the project within the established period.
  • Accept the Terms of Reference, the policies, and the conditions of participation.

Ineligible to Participate

  • Companies, commercial entities, or for-profit ventures.
  • NGOs, foundations, or civil associations as primary applicants.
  • Public or private entities presenting institutional-type projects.
  • Individuals who do not have an affiliation or the proper signed endorsement from their university.
  • Projects that have already been funded or executed previously.
  • Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline.
  • Individuals with conflicts of interest with the AION Synapse Foundation or the Selection Committee.

Micro-grant

Up to USD 1,000

Each selected project may receive a micro-grant of up to USD 1,000, in accordance with the approved budget and the conditions established in the Grant Agreement.

Specialized support during the technical execution period to facilitate the achievement of milestones and deliverables.

Access to personalized sessions with researchers and professionals from the international AION Synapse network.

International visibility

Dissemination of the project and its results on the institutional channels of AION Synapse and its strategic academic partners.

Important Information regarding the Grant

The funding awarded corresponds to a competitive micro-grant intended exclusively for the execution of the approved project. Disbursement, execution, monitoring, and closing are subject to the Grant Agreement and the official Terms of Reference.

No. The call is strictly addressed to individuals affiliated with the higher education and research system. Applications submitted by companies, non-governmental organizations, foundations, associations, public entities, or any other legal entity will not be accepted.

Yes. Every application must have the affiliation with, or endorsement of, an eligible university, higher education institution, or research center or institute of Latin America and the Caribbean, in accordance with the provisions of the call's Terms of Reference.

Each selected project may receive a micro-grant of up to USD 1,000, in accordance with the approved budget and the conditions established in the Grant Agreement. Up to five (5) projects in total will be selected.

Projects must be executed within a maximum period of four (4) weeks after the signing of the agreement. Subsequently, beneficiaries will have five (5) calendar days to submit the final documentation.

The application is submitted by completing the Official Electronic Form available on this page and uploading all required documentation in a single ZIP file.

No. The application must be submitted as a single complete ZIP file through the Official Electronic Form. Documents sent independently or as supplements will not be accepted. Only in the event of an error may you perform a single complete resubmission, which will replace the previous one.

No. Once the application is submitted and closed, no substitutions or updates to the documents can be made, unless you detect an omission and resubmit the complete package before the official deadline.
